Orb, Day 2 of the Great Heat's Beginning

[Kay looks tired. His injuries haven't fully healed yet -- there are some bandages visible above the neckline of the tunic he's wearing. It looks like he's done his best to hide them, but not quite succeeded.]

So, uh...I've got this horse, and...does anybody want it? I mean, I'm not going to do anything with it. I can't freaking ride a horse. So it might as well go to someone who can, right?

I can get around just fine without it, and I don't have a clue how to take care of the damn thing. Someone take it off my hands already. Same with this sword thing.

[He holds it up, turning it back and forth in the light, looking at it.]

I don't need it. I don't even know if it's any good. But if I keep it, it's not gonna kill anything but dust bunnies, because it's not coming out from under the bed, you know what I mean?

Any takers? I'll trade you something for them.

[ she had prepared for the day earlier still. it was custom to rise early to hear the people of mereen, here it was no different. daenerys gives a single nod. ]

[He'll get there first, since Knights are housed right by the stables. Kay's waiting for her, sitting on a bench against the wall opposite the stalls. He's slumped forward, resting his forearms on his knees, bored rather than tired.]

[ daenerys makes her way to him, promptly and with little trouble. she's familiar with most places by now, has wondered her way from here and there in search of answers, of knowledge. she does not believe there is no way out for she cannot fully trust a place with such a lax king.

she takes notice of him soon enough, walks with dragon on one shoulder, black tail curled around her arm. drogon is already swiveling his head in his kay's direction. ]

The man with the horse.

[ dany begins, expression polite; somewhat curious. ]

[Whoa, dragon.

Whoa, gorgeous lady.

Both are kind of striking. Kay clears his throat.]

That's right. My name's Kay.

This is the horse I was talking about.

[He points to a stormy gray, dappled stallion in the stall across from where he's sitting. It's definitely a war horse, and a spirited one.]

It doesn't have a name.

[ daenerys smiles at him slightly in acknowledgement, for it is the way of it when you barter and sell, and her violet eyes fall easily onto the horse he gestures towards. ]

He is beautiful.

[ she edges towards the stallion, glancing at him and while a queen should not ask permission, she asks because this horse is his and it is what she would do herself. ]

May I?

[Man, all these ladies apparently really like his horse. It almost makes him wonder if he should keep it. Almost.

Kay's not really sure what she's asking to do, but it doesn't matter that much to him. She can do whatever she likes -- whatever you do when you check out a horse you might buy.]

Go ahead.

[He does stand up, though, to get a look at what she's doing.]

[ she reaches for the horse, offers her open palm and finds that if this stallion were a brighter shade he would be like her silver. perhaps he will do what most horses do, sniff her palm with his great nose.

she moves to stroke his side with small hands, lifting her head with a bit of surprise. ]

I have a silver mare, where I come from. Among my husband's people, they did not believe in giving names, so I called her my silver. If he were a shade lighter I would think him to be her brother.

[ there's a smile in her voice now, as she touches his flank ]

And these spots, I suppose. You wish to sell him?

[Married? Damn. Oh, well.]

That's right. Well, more like a trade, really.

What would you give me for him?

[ there is a pause. not any of her dragons, surely. if anything she would give her a thing she was given in the beginning. she reaches around her neck, the strange stone dangling on a gold chain. it's size is easily half her open palm, smooth and round, a hot red.

she holds it out to him. ]

It was given to me, it serves little use save decoration. Would this be enough? You could surely make coin from it.

[Kay looks at it, considering.]

Do you mind if I take some time to think about it? I mean, that horse is probably the most valuable thing I've got in this place.

[He wants to see what other people have to offer before he makes his decision.]

No, I do not mind at all, Ser Kay. You are a Knight here, are you not?

[ she glances once more over at the horse with something like nostalgia. ]

That's right. I mean, that's what they say. I'm pretty sure it takes more than what I've got to be an actual knight.

[The impression he always got of knights was that they were chivalrous, virtuous protectors. He's...really just a teenage murderer.]

[ there is a wry smile there ]
Not much, ser. Only the words of a King or Queen. There may be many 'knights' but fewer true ones.

There hadn't been any where I came from for hundreds of years, "true" or not.

[Well that wasn't quite the truth; people were knighted sometimes, but somehow he doubts Sir Ian McKellan is Daenerys' idea of a true knight.]

It's ancient history for me.

No knights? What of Kings or Queens? It is an uncommon world you speak of.

[ sadly ser gandalf did not qualify for dany. ]

Nah, we don't -- well, no, there's a queen of England. Some places still have kings and queens, but most places have politicians instead. Presidents, prime ministers. We elect them.

[He wonders if she's from the past or something. Despite the dragon, Kay thinks it's possible -- who is he to say that dragons didn't exist in medieval Europe?[

You..choose your leaders?

[ daenerys isn't certain what she thinks of that. you cannot simply choose anyone for not everyone is suited to rule let alone have the compassion necessary for it. or the fire, she thinks, and watches him carefully. ]

I have never heard of such a way.

[Oh god why is he the one who has to explain modern politics to a hot girl from the past? Kay got a D in World History, he can't handle this!

Daenerys will see that Kay doesn't find the subject particularly interesting, and would rather get the explanation out of the way quickly. He starts talking with his hands. ]

Everybody chooses them. It's like...okay, so a couple of people volunteer to be leaders, and then everybody votes for which one they want. We've done it that way for three hundred years.

[Kay doesn't care that it's actually closer to 200, or 250. See? Barely passed World History.]

An interesting world indeed. My kingdom has never known such ways.

You're happy with just having kings and queens, then?

[He blinks, caught by surprise.]

Oh.

That's cool, I guess.

[Meeting a queen is kind of neat. Like meeting the Queen of England, but more legit. Kay is also deeply glad he has not already put his foot in his mouth talking about monarchy vs. democracy.]

So it works for you. The whole royalty thing.

[ she looks a bit amused at that reaction. ]

It works best when it betters the kingdom. As my kingdom stands now, being ruled and fought over by usurpers does it little good.

[Wait, what did "usurper" mean again? The word sounded familiar... Kay dug back into his memories of reading adventure books when he was little. He remembers it having something to do with royalty -- wasn't it someone who took a throne that wasn't theirs?]

Did you get a chance to actually rule it before they kicked you out?

No. The Usurper, Robert Baratheon took the throne before my birth, slaughtering my family either in battle or with his own men to do the deed for him. My brother Viserys escaped with my Mother on the last of our fleet, cast out in Essos.

Now, I alone remain, the last of the blood of the dragon.
