The great NPC Hunt! (Open NPC log)

Every role has its place, as all the towns people will tell you. The Witch is always in the Two Faced Forest, the King on his throne (unless he's off gallivanting again), the White Mage still rests in his spell bound sleep in the Monastery with the Monks (and Tom).

Those who have their own special roles, however, are always harder to be found... Where do you look to find Order and Chaos? Where do you look to find Balance...? Are they found in the looking? Or in looking, are you the one found?

"You're not alone in that sentiment," Selene answered with a snort. "But I get it, you don't want to get involved directly." She shook her head. "Damn it, fine. IS there anything you would be willing to recommend I do to help him, or do you simply not care at all?"

"If you want to help that boy, keep him out of the fight. He wasn't supposed to be part of it to start with. But no, neither side can leave well enough alone, always have to pull and tug. Idiots, all of them, giving power to whatever crazy fool will claim allegiance to them. Bah! They're making a fine mess of this place with that stupidity..."

She watched the old woman for a moment, and then shrugged. "I'll try, but I don't think the monks think very much of me after...well. I don't think they'll want him to keep out of it." She made sure the door was closed, and turned, not coming any further into the house.

"Who is using him, anyway? What are the forces involved? The people in the town don't know a damned thing."

"The monks aren't the problem. They're the only reason he's not that windbag's puppet proper, the lot of them." The witch snorted as she sat carefully down in an old looking rocking chair. "Of course they don't know anything, those fools don't have any more sense than the birds. Less, even!" she snorted. "That's what happens when you live in Order's stronghold. All your brains go out the window like the bathwater."

"Which windbag? Not the King, he's a puppet himself." She considered everything she knew about the Kingdom. "There's not anyone else even close. The voice in the throne room was female, so was the fire's. And the fire is clearly opposed to 'Order'." She studied the witch again for a moment. "What is going on here, anyhow?"

"The one who should be dead, but ain't," the Witch replied, rocking oh so slightly in her chair. "That's the problem when power goes to people's heads, it pushes all other sense out it them," she shook her head with a scowl before reaching for her pipe on the end table.

Selene looked at her, clearly interested by that little bit of news. She sniffed, and waved her hand around a little bit. "This have anything to do with that 'Great Mistake', by chance?"

"Which one?" came the amused response as the old woman began packing her pipe.

"I'd hazard a guess that it is the most recent, but I honestly don't know much about any of them." She shook her head, biting at her lip. "Not that they care to correct that, mind."

"Of course not, can't have just anybody knowing what's going on, they might actually want to do something about things, eh?" the witch chuckled. "Who mentioned it anyway? Not that fathead of a king, I'm sure..."

"Heaven forbid they bring us here to actually do anything. Quite against the point, I'm sure." She looked around, suddenly putting on a more innocent air. "Oh, he was there, if it matters, but no. After I got him to chase all his little courtiers out of the throne room for a little chat, some voice came in and seemed displeased with the whole thing." She looked back at the witch, perhaps a touch sly. "Don't know why suggesting bringing the boy mage into the city struck them as such a bad idea, but it all played into that great mistake the voice mentioned. Along with something about him being forced into something, I believe...a situation which seems to be correcting itself, according to the voice."

"Heh." There was a self satisfied air to the old woman as she inhaled on her pipe, holding the smoke in before exhaling slowly. "Finally pissed that one off, did they? Was wondering when that would all fall apart. Serves that windbag right."

"I imagine," Selene said, looking the old woman over. "That if I said you're just as bad as all the rest, you would at least understand what I meant?"

The question was answered with an amused cackle. "I'm an annoying cryptic windbag, you're saying?" she smirked, leaning back in her chair. "Maybe you just don't know how to ask a question."

"Fair enough, I owe you an apology. You're not that annoying, so I'll grant you aren't all that bad." Selene shrugged. "As far as questions, a pretty face and big teeth are usually enough to find out what I want to know, back home." She shook her head. "So who, or what, was the voice in the King's throne room that is 'supposed to be on his side,' or so he claimed?"

"Likely the voice of Balance. Not like she's on anyone's side but her own, mind, but for the time being, she's bound to support Order in its losing battle," the Witch answered between puffs on her pipe. "Miserable place to be, stuck in the middle of that mess."

"Balance." She nodded, slowly. "Stuck with Order. I'm guessing that's about where I am. Also, incidentally, in the middle of the mess, as well." She sighed, and looked around the house.

"What's this Voice of Balance doing? Other than being on the side of Order, I mean. Does she...does it...actually do anything, or merely watch and root for one side or the other?"

"Hell if I know. She has the sense not to go around being a flashy twit like some others I could mention," the Witched rolled her eyes as she paused to take a puff on her pipe. "Probably why she's been the same while all the others that Order and Chaos try and make their champions get their fool selves killed."

"Their champions? You mean us?"

The cackle that exploded from the witch was loud and raucous in it's amusement. "Hardly! You're just the latest attempt at Order to actually do something about it's miserable failings."

Selene didn't respond to the laughter; she'd guessed at least part of the answer already, but when the witch confirmed them, she paused to think it over. Very slowly, she looked up at the witch.

"The boy." Almost immediately, she was shaking her head. "No, not the boy. Not really. That's what losing its hold on him. The great mistake they were talking about. Am I close?"

"More or less," the Witch nodded, leaning back in her chair again. "That damned fool took something of Nature and tried to force Order on it. Now that he's mostly dead, Order's hold on the boy is slipping."

"What did he take from Nature?" She hasn't exactly forgotten why she came, but so long as the woman was willing to talk, she'd listen, that was for damned sure. "And why?"

The Witch made a face at her. "The boy," she pointed out with a tone of appointment's. "Pay attention, girl, you're starting to let that dress cloud your mind."

Selene blinked. "So the boy isn't mostly dead, someone else is?" She bit her lip, and sighed. "And whoever it is was using the kid." After a moment, though, she growled, a very deep growl. "The King knew about this, I take it?" Without even realizing it, she bared her teeth a little. "I knew I shouldn't have just walked out. Not that his guards are very frightening. That fat little..." With visible effort, she bit off the insult, pushing her hands together.

"So someone took the boy," she said, voice still angry. "Something happened, and whoever did it is losing that grip. Which happened after the forest burned down." She looked at the witch. "Is Kori in danger from this?"
