What: In the Forest is a candy house, and a cranky old witch who wants these dang heroes to get the hell off her lawn!





Deep in the Two Faced Forest, next to a lake of impossible clarity sits a small candy house. Walls made of gingerbread, decorated with hard candy that magically stays unmelted in the sun, it's picturesque and inviting. Care to knock on the door? Or just have a nibble of the gingerbread? Either way, take great care. The witch is not known for her good nature...

"Go away! No one's home!" came a cranky old voice from inside. "Lousy heroes, how's a witch supposed to get anything done around here when people keep bothering her..." mutter mutter mutter grumble.

"A witch?" Gretel half asked, half choked. She stared at the house like it was about to attack her, frozen to the spot by the conflicting feelings of fear and anger.

"No, a nun. Of course a witch, who else would be able to live out in these woods alone, huh? Now scram, before something eats you. Forest's no place for kids."

[halfwitch]

"Something? Like you?" She raised her voice, still staring at the house.

[thequestgiver]

"What's with you people and your obsession with cannibalism?" the witch's voice muttered. "The hell would I want to eat someone like you for? You made a gingerbread or something?"

[halfwitch]

"You're the one who said something about eating people." Gretel gritted out, hands going into her pockets to hold her wands. "Witches eat kids in the stories you know. And the ones I've met do even worse."

[thequestgiver]

"And humans in stories kill witches and steal their possessions in the name of their own personal glory. Should I expect the same of you?"

[halfwitch]

"I would have never hurt the witch if she hadn't came after me and Hansel first." Gretel said gravely, body tense. "I don't care about glory or any of that. I just wanted to live."

[thequestgiver]

"Then stay out of the forest. Only those who can walk without fear amongst the darker side of these woods has any right to stay in this place."

[halfwitch]

"I can deal with darkness."

[thequestgiver]

"And the creatures which hide with in?"

[halfwitch]

"I've killed horrid creatures before."

[thequestgiver]

The witch snorted. "Yet your voice quakes in fear at my own. Begone, child. Save your boasts for someone who will be impressed."

[halfwitch]

"I'm not boasting. It's fact." Gretel totally didn't say that with a pout. "And how don't I know that as soon as a turn around you won't try to attack me?"

[thequestgiver]

"Because I could have blasted your damned fool head off from here if I were so inclined, you daft child. I don't need your back to be turned. Can't even see me, can you? I could be right behind you for all you know!"

[halfwitch]

Gretel tensed at the thought, trying hard not to give into the urge to look over her shoulder. "You're not there. You're just trying to scare me." Which she was.

"And like a fool, you keep standing there, trying my patience. What is you want, child? Why have you come to bother me?"

[halfwitch]

Truth be told, Gretel did want to turn and run. She was just waiting for legs to stop imitating jelly before moving. And besides, talking bravado had always helped steel her nerves.

"Nothing from you. I was just exploring. I didn't even know anyone lived out here."

[thequestgiver]

"Someone just 'exploring' would have turned tail and run the moment I spoke."

[halfwitch]

"No. Someone's who was a coward would have ran."

[thequestgiver]

"More like someone with more brains than to pester a witch," the crone snorted. "You know the difference between a coward and a hero? The coward is the person who knew well enough to run when the hero was being devoured by a dragon!"

[halfwitch]

She snarled. "A hero would defeat the dragon, not be eaten by it. You're thinking of a weakling."

[thequestgiver]

"Then you are a weakling, are you, little girl? For a dragon would make snort work of you."

[halfwitch]

"I'm not weak!" She shouted, stomping her feet.

[thequestgiver]

"You're a scrap of a girl with no power behind your words. You're as weak as the blades of grass!"
