Log: At the Thorns

What: The heroes gather at the thorns to get a first hand look at the problem.

There was a solemn sort of quiet at the edge of the thorns, the looming mass of twisted brush seemed to shift and creek as it was observed, sounding almost like the rocking of a boat at sea. Here and there a keen eye could catch a glimpse of what might have been a house, or an inn lingering in the harsh grasp. A sign post. A length of wooden board. Like the sea, it had swallowed it up, curling around it all and splintering it all into fragments almost unrecognizable. Now and then, there was a flit of motion. A small brown bird camouflaged by the thick branches, made visible only by it's head tilting this way, then the other, before it flew off.

Flora, her tried to see if she could talk to them again, but with very little success before she turned her head slightly, spotting someone she remembers talking to at least once or twice before. Looking down she shook her head, saddened by the fact she couldn't communicate with it.

"No, they seem to be quiet, or just refusing to talk to me."

"I was wondering if you would be able to get anywhere with them."

Eagle looked off at the thorns that seemed to stretch on forever from where he was standing.

"Is there anything else you could try? Maybe some kind of anti-growth spell?"

He really didn't know much about magic, Eagle wasn't even sure there was such a thing as an anti-growth spell, but it never hurt to ask.

Flora's fingers lightly traced along the spikes of the thorns, trying to think of another method to use, or at least to find a way through to possible see if it works further in. Maybe there was another reason it was so quiet.

"I'm not sure about a anti-growth spell, but maybe if we could find a way further in, then maybe I could communicate."

"Further in?"

Easier said than done really. Cutting the vines caused them to lash out at their attacker and they were so thickly overgrown it would be difficult to crawl into them.

"You might not like it, but I wonder how these vines would handle fire. If they would bent away from the flame maybe we could make a big enough gap to head inside?"

So not actually doing any damage to the plant at all just scaring it a little to make room for the two adventurers to pass by.

No, she didn't like the thought of fireto the thorns at all, in fact she was worried they might react really badly to it, after all she can feel when a plant is in pain, so what's to say she might feel it to this one.

Looking down slightly, she was still uncertain if that was the best idea, she wanted to find out more about the thing, but yet at the same time, she wanted to see if she could try another method first.

"Fire can only be used as a last resort"

"It might not work anyway. The thorns do have a tendency to lash out at anyone they perceive as a threat."

The soldiers had mentioned that to him any number of times. They had epic tales of people who had nearly been lost to the thorns for being too aggressive with them.
Eagle had even seen that for himself when he had tried to slash at them a bit. The thorns grew back faster and thicker than they had been before.

"Unfortunately since they are magically based and I have no way to scan them for a weakness since all of my technology disappeared when I arrived here I really don't know what to do with them. Do you have any ideas?"

Flora just paused as she leant down in hopes that there was a way inside, but so far there was no luck. She was starting to worry more and more about the plant and what it can possibly do to the others, or even to itself.

Kneeling down, she closed her eyes, she wanted to focus and try her hardest in order to find a better way. "I'm hoping that maybe one of my plant can find a way through, if I just do this correctly."

"So you are going to send another plant into the thorns and maybe it will be able to tell you what is going on in there?"

Now that was a plan. Eagle hoped it would work. Finding out more about these thorns would be useful for those poor soldiers who were trying so hard to protect their home.

She closed her eyes, focusing her magic unto the ground, her hand gently stroking it, making sure that the soil was just right for them to grow. Once she was certain that everything might go well, she started to focus even more, her magic flowing from her hands towards the soil.

It wasn't for a good few minutes before there was a small bud popping out from the ground as she opened her eyes as she smiled at the now growing bud.

"There we go, grow big and strong and help us, okay?" She said still focusing her magic.

That was impressive, getting a plant to grow as quickly as that just with magic. Eagle hadn't even noticed a seed around. Her magic must have searched for a dormant seed in the ground and encouraged it to grow for her? Very impressive.
Eagle stood back and watched Flora work. He didn't want to get in her way or break her concentration by distracting her. He didn't really have any idea how much power a spell like that required after all.

Flora soon stood up, moving her hands away as the plant continued to grow upwards for a bit before turning and attempting to go within the thorns.

"Hopefully the thorns won't think of another plant as an enemy."

And indeed, the thorns seemed to be paying the little plant no mind at all.

Eagle watched as the little plant weaved it's way deeper into the thorns.

"Look at that, it seems to be working. Can you ask your plant how thick the thorns are?"

He had always been curious about that. Just how much of a problem were these thorns and how long had they been growing there?

No matter how deep the plant could travel, it would not reach the edge of the wall of thorns. Indeed, there were already sections which were impassible by how tight the thorns had already grown.

Flora closed her eyes, in order to be able to discern at what the pant already knew. Keeping quiet for the meantime so she could hear it's sweet words.

"It says they can be pretty thick and that there are certain areas that not even it can pass through."

"Is there anything else you could ask your plant friend there? I'm not sure if it could find out if the thorns have any kind of weakness or not but... anything it could tell us might be useful."

Flora went back to focus on the plant, she wasn't sure what other information she could gather, but she knew all she had to do was try.

"So, far nothing comes through, but they say they'll try and keep looking, but any signs of a weakness seem slim."

"If the plant can't find anything else out I suppose it can't be helped. Magic that could cause something like this must be very powerful."

Se nods slightly, recalling the plant back as she gently places her hand upon it, making the plant bloom there for now. "There we go, for now at least this plant will keep an eye for me, just in case there is a change."

She stood up straight and turned around. "Your right, it must be very powerful, after all I can't seem to use magic against it, nor can I get information from it."

"Thank you for giving it a try anyway."

Even if they hadn't learned very much it had still been very nice of Flora to journey all the way out here to try her magic out like this.
