This would be a familiar scene to most; Mytho standing in the middle of town, a bird perched on his outstretched hand, others fluttering about him. The crown was also to be expected, but while at first glance, it looked as if he had finally been dressed to his princely standard, the top of his tapered down in to a long flowing skirt of white and deep blue with gold accents.

It would seem the prince had been given the roll of princess in this new world...

Duck had been exploring the town with Fakir, perfectly content to roam the streets in a borrowed blouse and pants and introduce herself to the villagers as a regular girl. Though she'd gotten rid of the shiny crown and the enormous skirts, however, a few birds still trailed along behind her, perching on nearby fenceposts and roofs. She was pretty sure she'd never get used to seeing the ducks and geese in people's front yards bowing to her.

"So all you know is that there are thorns here? Like in Sleeping Beauty?" she asked Fakir, peering up at a nearby fruit tree to see if there was anything ripe for picking. "Maybe that's the story we're in, and all they're trying to do is find Prince Charmi--"

A sudden flurry of twittering cut her off. Several of the omnipresent little birds swooped down from out of nowhere, chattering excitedly. Although their voices came out as something of a tangle, she could make out the basics of a message.

"Fakir! They're saying that a new princess just arrived!"

"I really doubt we're in any story we'd al-" Fakir began just as Duck and the assorting twittering nuisances cut him off. He sighed. "That's all well and good for them, but I'm not really interested in meeting her."
pas_de_ducks: (Good news everyone!)

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-13 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"It might be somebody we know," Duck countered. "You didn't know the other knight here was Mr. Ben until you saw him, didn't you? So we should go and take a look."

Fakir's mouth straightened itself out into a disapproving line as he struggled to recall any acquaintance of his he would expect to become a princess. He shuddered audibly.

"Let's get it over with. Lead the way, bird whisperer."

She stuck out her tongue briefly, then grabbed his wrist and set out after the birds. They were leading her back towards the main square; from a distance she could see a slim figure in a wide blue skirt.

"Hey!" she blurted before she could stop herself. "Are you new here too?"
loyalbeyonddeath: (shocked)

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Mytho..." Fakir blanched, eyes wide and heart suspended somewhere in his throat. He swallowed it down and shook his head; there was no point in any excitement.

"What are you doing in a dress?" he asked brusquely, frowning as he looked Mytho over.

Duck stared, wordless, for a few moments; then an enormous smile lit up her face with a sudden brilliance. Still pulling Fakir behind her, she ran to Mytho, only letting go of her friend's wrist to throw her arms around the other boy.

After all, she might not envision a fairy tale ending with him anymore, but he was still her prince.

"Mytho!"

Looking down at his own slightly unusual clothes briefly, Fakir nodded. "Of course," he muttered, finally moving to stand near the two of them. Empty eyes. Of course. "Are you all right? When did you get here?"
pas_de_ducks: (Hmm?)

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Something was off. Mytho was warm as ever, his voice had the same familiar ring and rhythm... but...

"Your heart," she murmured. "I can't hear it."

Rue had been spending her days idly in the castle when she discovered something unfortunate: The crows here could speak. More unnervingly they could only speak to her, and seemed to take a great interest in coming to her window to inform her of whatever they felt was important news. That morning, she had been awoken early by chatterings of white hair, and scarcely had she heard it before she began pulling herself back into her wedding dress.

Following them down the road, she found him in the middle of the village, less-than-pleased that she wasn't the first.

"My prince!"
pas_de_ducks: (Oh noes!)

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-13 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Rue!"

Duck stepped away from Mytho quickly, feeling oddly self-conscious--she'd forgotten how strange it could be, knowing they all loved him in some way. But maybe now they could all work together.

"Did the birds tell you too?"
loyalbeyonddeath: (Default)

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-13 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably the crows," Fakir said. He didn't move at all.
schrien_die_raben: (spoken softly)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-13 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Rue glared at Fakir, her eyes self-consciously fluttering back to the crows still sitting in the trees near them. But that didn't matter, she told herself, stepping forward to meet her prince. Nothing else did.

"I knew you'd come for me," she said quietly, taking his hands with an odd sort of reverence.
pas_de_ducks: (Oh noes!)

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-13 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
For a moment something odd twisted and bubbled inside Duck's heart. She wasn't used to seeing Rue like this: warm and gentle, her love free of possessiveness and despair. It was as if she were seeing something about her friend--and about love itself--that she hadn't really imagined before. It made her feel happy and lonely all at once.

Then she remembered that there had been no heartbeat in Mytho's chest.

Unsure of what to say or do, she glanced at Fakir, her face full of naked emotion.
loyalbeyonddeath: (who the what the huh)

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-13 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Fakir's mouth opened once, then closed, giving him the appearance of a very confused fish. He didn't imagine there was much he could say that Rue wouldn't be angry with him for bringing up.
schrien_die_raben: (tsuntsun)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-13 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Rue looked him up and down, frowning. There was something horribly familiar about that blank stare.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked. "And just what on Earth are you wearing?"
loyalbeyonddeath: (sort of a reserved boy)

Fuck you, internet connection!

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Fakir shifted uncomfortably. Did he really have to be the one to point this out?

"Obviously he's wearing a dress," he half-sighed. "As for the look, I think we can all tell what's happened."
pas_de_ducks: (Do sheep shrink when it rains?)

RIGHT IN THE EAR

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-18 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"The book thought he was a princess?' Duck ventured, her head tipping to one side as utter confusion washed in to replace the momentary jealousy.
schrien_die_raben: (tsuntsun)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"That's ridiculous!" said Rue, ignoring the worrying feeling Mytho's blank eyes were giving her. "He's nothing like a princess."
loyalbeyonddeath: (GAWD)

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Somewhat relieved that Rue hadn't addressed his other comment, Fakir decided to follow the current thread of conversation.

"Maybe it has strange standards of what a princess is," he said. He looked Mytho over again and shook his head. This was worse than the time the girls in the beginners class had put lipstick on him.

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-18 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
She decided, for the moment, that it would be better not to mention the fact that the birds kept talking about Mytho as "the new girl". But with that distraction behind her, the strange twisting feeling took hold again. Duck bit her lip and glanced from Rue to Mytho to Fakir again, unconsciously knotting her fingers together.

"There's always the castle," she murmured, rather lamely.
schrien_die_raben: (huh?)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Rue smiled uneasily, her grip not-so-subtly tightening on Mytho's hand.

"Of course," she said. "He'll be staying with me."
loyalbeyonddeath: (Default)

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-18 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I think we should all stay together," Fakir said, a note of finality in his voice as he looked between them. He was dismayed to realize that, once you put them both in big fluffy dresses, it wasn't that easy to tell which of them was actually a girl. "This is a dangerous place, after all."
pas_de_ducks: (Hmm?)

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-18 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
As if in response to Rue's possessive body language, Duck moved a little closer to Fakir, linking her hands loosely around his wrist. It was more for comfort than anything else--she always felt just a bit stronger when he was around to support her, even if he was harsh about it--and to reassure herself that there was at least one person here who didn't make her heart feel all... complicated.

"I agree. If we stick together, then we can all take care of each other. Right?"
schrien_die_raben: (super smug)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-18 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose that's alright," Rue said, still watching Mytho's face for any signs of life. "We'll just stay in my room, and you two can take the ones next to it."
loyalbeyonddeath: (sort of a reserved boy)

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-19 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Nobody needs to share rooms," Fakir said sharply.
schrien_die_raben: (I are serious princess)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-19 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you trying to tell me I can't share a room with my own husband?" Rue asked in outrage, turning suddenly to him.
pas_de_ducks: (Oh noes!)

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
"She won't hurt him, Fakir!"

Duck wasn't sure why she blurted that out as suddenly and with as much conviction as she did. But her hands tightened on Fakir's wrist, and somehow even when she said it she knew it was the absolute truth.
loyalbeyonddeath: (I hate you SO MUCH)

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-20 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Did I say that she would?" Fakir hissed, totally dismissing Rue. "No. I said that no one would be sharing rooms. That's all."
schrien_die_raben: (excuse me?)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-20 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Why not?" Rue asked, a little less confrontational now that Duck had taken up for her. "He can't take care of himself when he's... like this, so he'll need somebody with him."
pas_de_ducks: (All you need is love)

[personal profile] pas_de_ducks 2011-09-20 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"So we should probably all stay close to each other," Duck put in, still grasping Fakir's wrist. "You don't have to share a room with anybody, but we can all take turns watching over him if we need to."
schrien_die_raben: (spoken softly)

[personal profile] schrien_die_raben 2011-09-20 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
"...I suppose that's fine," Rue said reluctantly. "Tonight, though, he should stay with me."

[personal profile] loyalbeyonddeath 2011-09-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Fakir frowned and his hand hung limp in Duck's grasp. "I'm sure you've missed him."
