1st Reading ❂ Day 7 ❂ Arrival in a Foreign Land

[Since she’d arrived here Brietta had managed to find some sign of civilization it just wasn’t the sort of civilization she expected. She’d found a little town that didn’t look like it belonged in the same era as Polymagic University. Someone had kindly mentioned that one could communicate using the orbs much like they did through the electronic journals back at school… with the exception that the orbs could also transmit video. She found some amusement in how the magical orb had surpassed the electronic technology but it wasn‘t enough to allay the more pressing concerns. She gently plucked it off her necklace and tentatively began her message.]

Pardon me….

[She raised a fist to her lips and looked quite unsure of herself]

.. But could anyone tell me where I am? I.. must have gotten lost.. Somehow.

[Dropping her hand back to her side, she tacked on]

I would appreciate any information. Thank you.

From what I've heard, I think it was that idiot King. We're supposed to fight for balance between chaos and order or some sort of nonsense like that.

This is the second time I've heard the king referenced in such a manner.. [Maybe he really was an idiot?]

If they think we're all just going to cooperate then I'm afraid they are sorely mistaken.

[Dark? That was sort of an unusual name but not unusual enough to openly remark about or dwell on.]

It's a pleasure to meet you Dark, I'm Brietta Sullivan.

[Brietta was a little taken aback by the response, and hoped that no color had leaked onto her cheeks.]

I-uh -well..

[She tried to gloss past her obvious hesitation]

I wonder.. if all the books are the same, or quite different. Was the book that brought you here blue in color, with thorns embossed on it?

[Yup, a totally smooth transition. It wasn't such an unusual saying.. and it shouldn't have thrown her off her guard.]

[ He smiles, ever so charmingly. ]

Sounds like the same book I remember. It's probably the same for everyone.

Mm. [She nodded]

They went to an awful lot of trouble to assemble all of us... but then again.. if the kingdom is endanger of course they would put in the extra effort.

I wonder if we have anything in common. Surely, this wasn't random selection.

You think so?

[In all honesty, Brietta thought she had an ace in the hole and wasn't trapped at all. That.. and being teleported to a new location certainly beat being captured by a passel of circus freaks and trolls. .. but that was another story]

This isn't the first time I've run into something... [What was the right word...] unusual like this.

You seem to be handling it well yourself.

All part of the job description. Mysterious spells and magicked worlds are the standard fare for a master art thief.

What sort of job is--

[She trailed off then exclaimed the following after it had been revealed]

An art thief?!

[Why would anyone openly admit being a thief?! She played up her surprise not wanting anyone to learn her own secret]

[ He laughs, just a little maniacally. ]

The most lucrative.

[Here's the first sign that Dark might be a little odd. Her own sense of pride bristled at his claims at being the most lucrative thief.. though granted she dealt in magical wares not art specifically.]

You certainly aren't lacking for confidence, but do you think it's wise to advertise?

No point keeping it a secret. There's nothing worth stealing around here anyway.

Nothing? [She might sound a touch disappointed] At all?

[Well.. she had been considering giving up a life of crime. Being swept away to this world.. might.. possibly.. force her to change just by it's lack of intriguing things not that she planned on staying]

Just cheap trinkets and cursed gems.

[ Dark's not too happy about it himself. ]

You'd think in a kingdom that produces dozens of magical books and distributes them throughout the lands that there would be something interesting here...

Ah- but the important thing is getting back home, of course.

'Course. Our options are pretty limited at the moment.

[Maybe yours are... ]

We got here, so there must be a way to do the reverse.

If I find a way, I'll be sure to bring you with me. [ He shrugs. It'll take time to find new ways to use his magic with the limitations he has now. ]

Are.. you.. from Earth? [She hesitated to ask, knowing that someone else had already claimed to be from another planet entirely]
