Endurance, strength, and a naturally powerful build - in a hand to hand fight against an ordinary human, the chances of him being overpowered are slim. Giles has a lot of advantages in a fistfight.

Speed and agility have never been one of them. It was something he was forced to learn a long time ago. Take the hit and take the chance that comes with it, because you probably won't get another. Especially not against someone who can disappear in a blink, and especially not in a tavern filled with milling bodies and spotty lighting that will offer them every chance.

But the kick is a solid one, connecting right at the solar plexus and leaving him winded and seeing stars. Giles had wanted to restrain, not hurt, but the same instincts rear up in him - fight, or flight, and he's tired of chasing her. He moves to kick her in the back of the legs, keeping what tenuous hold he has on her in the process. If he gets ahold of the necklace, the first thing he's going to do is yank.
